Black Beauty Episode 4
Tonight I will read a few more Chapters from Black Beauty. Written by Anna Sewell while she was bedridden and seriously ill Black Beauty was published in 1877. The author died 5 months after its publication but lived long enough to see its success as it was an immediate best seller and still is today. Anna Sewell has said that she wrote the novel to induce kindness, sympathy and an understanding in the treatment of horses. Her novel succeeded in doing this and sparked many animal welfare movements. I will not be reading the novel in its entirety but just a few of my favourite chapters. Tonight Black Beauty will be leaving her beloved home of 3 years to live in a new home. You will hear about the bearing reins used at the time in tonights episode which were used to elevate a horses head as was fashionable then but uncomfortable and painful for the horse. The novel Black Beauty was instrumental in helping abolish the bearing rein which is still not used to this day. I hope you enjoy tonights episode. The edition I am reading uses text from the first edition and reflects the language and attitudes of the time it was written.
